| The Department of Psychiatry faculty provide comprehensive psychiatric care at the New England Medical Center as well as medical education and training in Psychiatry for the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. The Department of Psychiatry's clinical, teaching and research activities continued to grow in 1997. The discharges from the inpatient service increased (almost doubling in number), and length of stay decreased. The diversity of patients receiving treatment in the Department of Psychiatry has been maintained through providing services to Asian, geriatric, and mentally-retarded patients as well as the persistently and severely mentally ill. The Boston Emergency Services Team answered more than 40,000 calls with 6,000 triages and provided assistance to the Department of Mental Health in their attempts to manage the South Boston suicide epidemic. Psychiatry's Outpatient Department was reorganized with new walk-in clinics providing immediate care to patients from general medical clinics as well as patients recently discharged from the psychiatry inpatient service and the emergency department. The nursing home consult service made over 1,400 patient visits. The clinical neuroscience group under contract from the Department of Mental Health increased outpatient services and initiated new forensic and drug abuse services as well as completing development of the quantitated EEG laboratory at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital.

| The New England Medical Center (NEMC) Department of Psychiatry has established state-of-the-art facilities to provide comprehensive psychiatric services, teaching and research via a video conferencing system. The telemedicine system consists of a computer, monitor, video conferencing camera and a PictureTel telephone. Images are transmitted across ISDN telephone lines to other locations that have similar workstations. It is a picture telephone with the ability to provide extreme close-ups and to simultaneously monitor and transmit blood pressure, heart sounds and other physical signs during patient examinations and interviews. Telemedicine also provides the capability to transmit images such as brain scans, ultrasounds and blood screens via connection to a videocassette recorder.
