About Formed in 1947, the Tavistock Institute is an independent not-for-profit organisation. It combines research in the social sciences with professional practice.

Problems of institution-building and organisational design and change are being tackled in all sectors—government, industry and commerce, health and welfare, education, etc., both nationally and internationally. Clients range from multinationals to small community groups. A growth area has been the use of a developmental approach in evaluating new and experimental programmes, particularly in health, education and community development. This has also produced new training events in addition to the regular programme of group relations conferences.

Attachment and Psychopathology

(Kindly click here for the meeting's Web pages.)

Event sponsor: Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust

October 19-21, 2011
London, Greater London, United Kingdom

This course will resume on November 14 and conclude on November 15, 2011.

The course weaves together theory, human development, assessment, case examples and treatment applications to reframe maladaptive behaviour in terms of strategies for self-protection. The course focuses on development from infancy to adulthood, emphasising the process of adaptation and developmental pathways that carry risk for psychopathology.

The model used is the Dynamic-Maturational Model [DMM] of attachment and adaptation. The DMM is relevant to individuals who are at-risk, have been exposed to danger, display disturbed or maladaptive behaviour, or are diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder. A particular emphasis is cultural influences on attachment.

The course is structured developmentally and consists of lecture with slides, videotapes, role playing and interview transcripts to demonstrate the patterns and principles of development. A set of readings and exercises, tied to each day’s material, are offered.

The Attachment and Psychopathology course is a prerequisite to all assessment courses, such as the Adult Attachment Interview. Treatment strategies are described for each age period and include an integration of ideas from all the major theories of treatment as well as suggestions regarding risky practices that should be avoided.

Facutly: Patricia McKinsey Crittenden, PhD.
