|---|---|
| About | The Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, Inc was founded in 1912, as the result of a merger between the National Confederation of State Medical Examining and Licensing Boards (established in 1891) and the American Confederation of Reciprocating Examining and Licensing Boards (established in 1902).
The Federation's membership comprises the medical boards of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands and 13 state boards of osteopathic medicine. The Canadian provincial medical licensing authorities hold affiliate membership in the Federation. Individuals, physicians and non-physicians who are interested in licensing issues may become courtesy members. The Federation is a parent organization of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, and member organization of the National Board of Medical Examiners [NBME]. It was a founding member of what was to become the American Board of Medical Specialties and remains an associate member of that body. Additionally, a Federation representative sits on the board of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Together with the NBME, the FSMB established the United States Medical Licensing Examination [USMLE] as a single, uniform examination for medical licensure as well as the Post-Licensure Assessment System [PLAS]. FSMB also operates the Federation Physician Data Center, a nationally recognized system for collecting, recording and distributing to state medical boards and other appropriate agencies data on disciplinary actions taken against licensees by the boards and other governmental authorities. In addition, the FSMB operates the Federation Credentials Verification Service [FCVS] to provide a centralized, uniform process for state medical boards to obtain a verified, primary source record of a physician's core medical credentials. |
