European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees [EFPT]

About The European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees [EFPT], founded in 1993, is the first (perhaps only) international organisation of specialist trainees in any branch of medicine. As a permanent observer member of the European Board of Psychiatry and the European Board of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the EFPT actively participates both in the development of educational guidelines and in the evaluation of psychiatric training institutions in Europe. Through its annually held European Forum for all Psychiatric Trainees the EFPT provides a unique opportunity for the exchange of training-related experiences and opinions on current developments in psychiatry.

Psychiatric trainees are involved both in the "productivity" of institutional health services and in learning the scientific basis and acquiring the clinical skills of their specialty. The EFPT, as an international professional group, is positioned to help trainees in its 23 member organizations to monitor the conditions of psychiatric training, the quality of teachers and teaching facilities, accessibility of library services, opportunities to engage in research, etc., to make comparisons between countries, and to point out discrepancies between the formal / official goals of training and the actual local training conditions.

In its annual European Forums for All Psychiatric Trainees, EFPT has develped statements on such topics as:

  • National trainee organisations (Copenhagen 1995)
  • General medicine and neurology in psychiatric training (Ireland 1994)
  • Quality of training: supervision and evaluation (Copenhagen 1995)
  • Training in child psychiatry (Lisbon, 1996)
  • Psychotherapy training (Lisbon, 1996)
  • Requirements for teachers (Lisbon, 1996)
  • Quality assurance in training: independent inspections of training institutions (Athens, 1997)
  • Logbooks (Athens, 1997 and Ghent, 1998)
  • Experience in research (Ireland, 1994 and Athens, 1997)
  • Exchange of trainees between different countries (Copenhagen, 1995)
  • Part-time training (Ireland, 1994)
  • Removal of trainee from training (Ghent, 1998)

The experience that trainees thus accrue will help them deal with other organisational structures relevant to the specialty and to become more capable members of their professional societies.
