These values are promoted through a group process of exploration and training called the Balint Group. The goal of the Balint Group experience is for the participants to transform uncertainty, confusion, and difficulty in the doctor-patient relationship into understanding and meaning that nurtures a more therapeutic alliance between clinician and patient.

The goals of the American Balint Society are to:

• Communicate the value of the Balint approach
• Promote the inclusion of Balint Group training in residency training and other educational settings
• Develop training for Balint Group leaders
• Support research on the Balint process
• Nurture people who do Balint training

The American Balint Society strives to be visible and accessible to clinicians and educators who share its values.

ABE also offers information services (printed and on-line directories) used as reference/referral sources by the profession and the healthcare industry. These services contain information about the education, training, experience, and practice specialties of approx. 14,000 holders of the BCD.

ABE is independent, not-for-profit, and commited to setting and upholding national practice standards. In pursuit of its Mission and Goals, ABE promotes the BCD credential, examines for clinical competency, maintains and distributes useful information products and services, encourages the development of advanced theory and practice, interacts with professional and regulatory organizations, and advocates for standards and the recognition of advanced clinical social work in government, marketplace and professional arenas.

Objectives:

• Establish, for the United States of America and Canada, professional standards in the fields of psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy
• Certify qualified professionals on the basis of these standards
